This major
expansion of a turn-of-the-century house in an established
neighborhood close to
Concord
Center
is constrained by a tight corner lot, and designed to look
as though it was part of the original construction.
The new construction
takes the form of two subordinate wings, set back from the
main house on both street fronts.
The seamless
integration of new and old was accomplished by imitating the
existing house trim details and window sizes.
The open porches with
shallow roof slopes at the intersections of the new wings to
the old structure, softens the transitions while echoing the
existing front porch.
The doors,
woodwork and finish materials in the new interiors reproduce
those of the existing rooms.
The additions provide
sufficient space for an eat-in kitchen, a large family room
with fireplace, a mudroom, a lavatory and a
single-bay
garage on the first floor; and, a master bedroom suite and
guest bedroom suite on the second floor.
