Additions to a well-preserved 18th century historic house
with attached barn, on a corner lot in Carlisle surrounded
by farm fields, required special attention to traditional
detailing. The new wing is subordinate to and set back
form the front facade of the old house, and symmetrically
placed windows and trim details that match the old.
The back side of the wing is perpendicular to an existing
one-story ell that connects the house to a large barn and is
not visible from the streets. This allowed for more
freedom of design, including a bay window with copper roof
and French doors with sidelights. A traditional
screened porch with a hipped roof was added to the back of
the barn and ell, defining one edge of an exterior stone
terrace that is directly accessed by a door from the
existing kitchen in the ell as well as the French doors in
the new living room.
Special attention was given to the interior woodwork of the
addition, including a raised paneled fireplace wall, cased
ceiling beams, built-in bookshelves and cabinets, and a new
formal stairway with custom newel posts and balustrade.
The new second floor space accommodates a spacious master
bedroom suite and one additional bedroom. |
